Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Resin Bound and Resin Bonded?

The basic premise for both of these systems is that decorative stones are glued to a solid surface. These are glued or bound using high performance Resin Binders and depending on which system chosen gives a different appearance and performance.

Resin Bonded is a thin, impermeable coating system used to firmly bond aggregates to a stable substrate. This system involves applying our high performance resin directly onto a stable substrate and then dressing (or scattering) it with our washed and kiln dried decorative aggregate. This system creates a coarse and attractive natural stone finish.

Resin Bound is a porous paving system that involves mixing our high-grade polyurethane resin binder directly with our stone aggregate blends, in a forced action mixer. Once mixed thoroughly, it is then applied to the substrate and hand-trowelled to a smooth finish, at the intended thickness.

How do I specify Resin Bond or Resin Bound?

In order to determine the most appropriate system, you will need to consider the following points. Making Ground is happy to assist with this process and the more information you can provide, the better:

Project TypeE.g. Residential or Commercial
Application TypeE.g. Swimming Pool Surround
TrafficE.g. Pedestrian or Vehicular
BaseE.g. Concrete
SystemE.g. Resin Bound
AreaE.g. 250m2 (The installer may wish to consider +5% for wastage)
ThicknessE.g. 18mm (N/A for Resin Bonded)
AggregateE.g. Scandinavian
Aggregate SizeE.g. 1-2mm
Ancillary ProductsE.g. Primer, Sealer, Anti-Slip
Add On’sE.g. Glow Stones

Are the Systems suitable for the regional hot temperatures?

Both of our systems are suitable for outdoor use in the Middle East. However, installation is recommended at between 5 and 35 degrees, so depending on the time of year you may wish to consider installation in the evening / night.

How long will the Systems last?

In terms of durability, the wear on the aggregate depends on the amount of use. These Systems were originally installed in the UK and are still going strong after 10+ years, however the resin technology suggests they will last a lot longer.

Can the Systems be used for areas with vehicular traffic?

We have a wide selection of Systems and Aggregates that are well suited to areas of vehicular traffic. Please contact us with your exact requirements so that we can match you to the best System.

Can the Systems be used with Client / Contractor own aggregates?

If customers wish to use another aggregate, they should make use of our in-house laboratory facilities prior to installing the system. This will confirm the stone mix strength, which resin is most appropriate for their chosen aggregate, and what UV discolouration will be present, if any. We strongly urge our customers to make use of this service prior to installing with an unapproved aggregate.

Aggregates must be clean (washed) and kiln dried, with moisture content no more than 0.5%. The aggregate must be fit for purpose. The system will only be as strong as the weakest component. Therefore aggregate choice is important. The suitability in a given application of weaker aggregates such as crushed glass should be considered carefully.

How much do the Systems cost?

With so many variables involved, we have to price up each project individually. Factors to be considered include project location, area size, aggregate selection (raw material cost) and shipping costs. Please let us know your requirements and we’ll be happy to provide you with a custom quotation.
