MAINTENANCE OF NATURAL GRASS (PART 5) – Dethatching and Top Dressing

In order to maintain a healthy green lawn all year round you need to action the following operations at least once or twice a year. Following these steps, this will contribute greatly to a healthy green lawn all year round and help prevent against pest and diseases.

 1) Dethatching

2) Aeration

3) Verti-cutting

4) Top dressing

We recommend that you do these at least twice a year, with the most appropriate time being April and September. This is when the grass in the Middle East is the most active and will give you the quickest results. Try to do all of these items in one or two days and incorporate your monthly fertilizer program into the operations.

 DETHATCHING

  • Dethatching is a process where you remove the build-up of dead grass. This process is essential to a healthy green lawn, as the excess thatch will prevent the water, fertilizers and pesticides to properly penetrate into the soil. In addition to this, the lawn will be more susceptible to pests and diseases, in particular fungal disease.
  • A process called scarifying is done to remove the thatch. There are specialized scarifying machines that you can use to do this and should be carried out twice yearly or as and when required. If you or your gardener doesn’t have a scarifying machine, then the thatch can be removed using a strong rake. Rake the grass firmly by hand when the soil is moist.

 AERATION

  • Due to the sandy soil and heavy water requirements in the region, the sub-base can get very hard and compacted. Therefore, you need to regularly aerate the soil, allowing the grass to breath and the soil to be free draining. This will also help the water and fertilizer reach the grass roots.
  • Aeration can be done with a machine that cores small holes in the soil. Again if you or your garden does not have this machine, then a hand fork can be used to spike the soil.

 VERTI-CUTTING

  • Another process to help reduce the thatch is verti-cutting. Whilst this process will help remove a small amount of thatch, it is in fact a process that vertically cuts the grass.
  • Warm weather grasses, which are used in this region, also have lateral stems that grow across the surface. Verti-cutting will cut the lateral stems by using a specialized machine. The blades on the machine can be set to the required height, we recommend that the cutting blades penetrate the surface by approximately 10mm. Verti-cutting should be carried out twice a year and we recommend the months of April and September. This is when the grass is most active in the Middle East due to the weather conditions and encourages growth for a dense healthy lawn.
  • After verti-cutting you should mow and aerate the lawn and then apply the monthly fertilizer application, prior to top dressing.

 TOP DRESSING

  • Top dressing is applying a thin layer of sweet soil over the grass. The soil needs to be worked into the grass, trying not to smother it. Ideally you want the soil to fall in between the grass blades. This process should be done to the entire lawn area and any low or uneven spots should be filled accordingly to ensure a level lawn.
  • For a garden lawn we recommend to mix compost with the sweet soil prior to spreading it on to the lawn. The top dressing mix should be 80% sweet soil and 20% compost. Make sure the mix is dry so it can be easily applied and worked into the ground.
  • Once applied, use a drag mat to go over the lawn in different directions. Do this when it is still dry, prior to irrigating. If you do not have a drag mat, then a soft brush can also be used. This will help work the top dressing mix into the grass, then water immediately after.

How To Prevent Common Lawn Diseases And Pests

How To Prevent Common Lawn Diseases And Pests

Prevent the most common lawn diseases and pests.

All natural lawns are subject to pest and diseases, even a well maintained lawn which appears green and healthy can be suddenly affected. Therefore, it is important to know what to look for and how to prevent it, before it is too late.

Firstly, make sure that when you use any pesticides or fertilizers that you check the manufacturer’s instructions / recommendations. These can be toxic so it is imperative that you check before use to ensure the safety and well being of you, your family and your pets. Also make sure any herb gardens or water sources are not contaminated.

Carry out regular checks for any pests or symptoms of disease. As soon as any pests or disease have been identified, you should treat immediately to stop it spreading further.

PESTS

With lawns you can separate the pest into two categories. These are above ground pests that eat the grass blades and below ground pests that feed on the roots.

  • For below ground pests (such as mole crickets, wireworms, grubs, etc.), you need to apply the pesticide (as per the manufacturer’s instructions) then water the lawn to ensure the insecticide / pesticide is soaked down into the roots. Below ground pests tend to be nearer the surface in the evenings when the ground is dryer, this is the ideal time for treatment. There are several pesticides available on the market such as Diazinon or Dursban that can be used to treat below ground pests.

  • For above ground pest (such as mites, army worms, etc.) we would also recommend application in the early evening, however, do not water until the following morning. Again, Diazinon and Dursban can be used or there is Malathion or Kelthane that can also be used.

Nematodes are tiny worms, which are too small to be seen by the eyes. They are not like earthworm and are a common pest in this region due to the sandy soil and warm weather. Root Knot Nematodes are the most common type in this region and attack the roots, which will cause the grass to wilt and deteriorate, as it gets weaker. This may be the reason why your lawn is thin and has yellow/brown patches, which is more often than not believed to be due to under watering.

If you believe you may have Nematodes, we recommend that you get the grass/soil tested first in order to identify exactly what the problem and so it can be treated accordingly. To treat nematodes you can use Dazoment or Ridomil. Always use with caution and as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

FUNGAL DISEASE

Fungal Disease is another common problem in the region and is generally caused by over watering and/or watering late in the day. To try to avoid this, we recommend watering in the early mornings and if and when necessary, early afternoons in the summer. When watering your lawn, you would want to make sure the water soaks down into the soil and encourages the grass roots to grow deeper. Therefore, regular lawn maintenance such as mowing, de-thatching and spiking are also very importance in order to prevent fungal disease.

Fertilizing and Watering For A Lush, Green Lawn

If you already have natural grass or are considering installing natural grass in your garden, here are some tips for fetilizing and watering a lush green healthy lawn:

WATERING

  • Watering should be carried out daily and we strongly recommend using an automatic irrigation system. This will help regulate the amount of water used and reduce the likelihood of over or under watering. We generally find most people/gardeners in this part of the world underestimate the amount of water required.
  • We recommend watering once a day in the early morning as this will help avoid water evaporation. Try to avoid watering at night as this may cause fungal disease.
  • The amount of water will vary depending on the time of year. In addition, newly planted grass will require more water whilst establishing. Please see table below as a guide.

Plant: Grass

Water requirement in the winter months per m2: 8 Litres

Water requirement in the summer months per m2: 14 litres

FERTILIZING

  • To have a healthy green lawn, your grass not only needs regular water, but also requires nutrients. These nutrients come in fertilizers and may vary slightly depending on a few factors. Fertilizing is a bit of a science and whilst all landscape professionals agree that it’s essential for a healthy lawn, many have their own fertilizing programs that they use.
  • The amount and coverage of fertilizer is important. Too little and you will not get the desired effect of a dense green lawn and too much can weaken the grass.
  • Depending on the size of grass area, the fertilizer can be applied by machine or for smaller areas can be applied by hand. Make sure you follow the safety and application manual from the fertilizer manufacturer.
  • We recommend applying the fertilizers prior to watering and then water thoroughly.
  • As a minimum, we recommend using an NPK fertilizer with an application rate of 25-30 gms/m2 per month.

MAINTENANCE OF NATURAL GRASS (PART 2)

Mowing, Trimming And Edging For A More Beautiful Garden

If you already have natural grass or are considering installing natural grass in your garden, here are some tips on mowing, trimming and edging to help maintai a lush green healthy lawn.

MOWING & TRIMMING

  • Your grass should be cut on a regular basis and as necessary depending on the time of year. We recommend twice a week between the months of April and October and once a week/fortnight between November and March. You should try to maintain a height of approximately 20-30mm and never cut more than a third of the grass height off in one mowing as this will cause shock and may even kill the grass. You should be able to set the cutting height of the grass on your lawn mower settings. It is recommended to use a collection bag to collect the off cuts when mowing.

EDGING

  • Edging is important when it comes to cutting the grass and should be carried out prior to mowing the lawn. The process is when we cut horizontally growing grass that ‘over spills’ the lawn at the edges, often bordering onto flower beds or hardscape. Grass in colder climates generally grows vertically; for example, from seed. However the grass we use grows horizontally as well, sending it’s runners horizontally across the soil surface. Whilst there are specialist edging machines, it is possible to do this by hand and will really make the lawn look neat and tidy.

Natural Grass Selection For Your Lawn

Natural Grass Selection

The desire for a lush green lawn is common amongst those of us lucky enough to have a garden. Grass not only softens the garden against hardscape, but it also provides a surface where the family can relax and play.

Retaining a year round lush green lawn is that little bit more difficult in the Middle East for obvious reasons, however if you are willing to put in the extra time and money, then the results can really make it worthwhile. When considering a natural lawn, bear in mind that you will pay a monthly premium for the luxury and you will need to consider the increase in your water bill, fertilizer, pesticide and maintenance costs.

If you already have natural grass or are considering adding natural grass in your garden, here are some tips to help you in achieving your lush & healthy green lawn.

Natural Grass Options

  • Generally there are 2 different types of natural grass used in the GCC, these are PASPALLUM and BERMUDA Grass. Whilst these are both warm weather grass they still require slightly more maintenance in this climate as they are not native to this part of the world.

  • Selected developments may have to follow a particular variety of grass. If you live on / around a Golf Course, you may find that the developer will specify the same grass that the Golf Course is using. This is to stop contamination of the different varieties as it can be very difficult to control.

  • When installing natural grass, it should be installed onto a 300mm deep sweet soil layer. For best results add some compost to the sweet soil prior to installing the turf.

  • We recommend you use an automatic irrigation system to control the amount of water used. This will not only give you a better end result but may save you money in the long run.

  • Due to the regions temperature, the warm weather grasses go semi-dormant in the winter months. Unfortunately, this is when we are more likely to be using the lawn and the wear and tear will take longer to repair.

  • Try to avoid planting grass in shaded areas and try to allow for enough space for trees to fully establish.

Employing a gardener is very easy in the UAE, however they are not trained horticulturists & probably not trained in landscape maintenance so there will be a limit to the service they can provide. By educating yourself in grass maintenance you will at least have a good idea of what your gardener should be doing to the best of their capability.
