EvaGlow at work

Introducing A New Material: Evaglow

Whether you’re from the landscaping industry and working on a new commercial project, or simply a homeowner looking for a new and exciting design for your exterior, chances are, you have considered a variety of options for your flooring. A number of factors are considered when making a decision about the design of your project and the type of resin flooring you want is no different – such as durability, sustainability, aesthetic impact, price and the like.

Resin Bound paving in particular is a smooth, durable, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly material that is less heat-absorbing than other traditional types of paving methods, which comes handy in a hot climate such as the UAE.

Introducing Evaglow By Making Ground

Evaglow is based on Making Ground’s Evabound resin bound paving system combined with the special glow stones that absorb the light during the day and emits a soft glow in the dark. It’s a unique and sustainable paving system that glows in the dark creating a decorative and eco-friendly way of illuminating patios, pathways, and general paving and hardscape areas.

How does Evaglow work? The material used to make Evaglow is capable of:

  • Storing energy by absorbing the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays during the day, and releases that energy at night, producing a soft glow without any power source
  • Providing a soft illumination to pathways and surfaces for better navigation at night
  • Lending a unique colourful aesthetic design to pavement surfaces.

Why choose Evaglow?

  • The system doesn’t require cables or electricity to work, helping you save on energy bills
  • It’s a durable, hard-wearing, homogeneous surface that can withstand tough use while maintaining its decorative value during daytime and night time
  • User-friendly and safe for both pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic.
  • Permeable – because of its porosity, water drains and evaporates instead of pooling, resulting to a cooler temperature surface than any asphalt paving or concrete
  • Anti-slip, making it safe for walking or running on

Available Colours

Evaglow is available in 3 colours:

  • blue
  • green
  • turquoise

The material and colours can be used to create unique designs, shapes and patterns to suit whatever concept you have in mind for a walkway, swimming pool area or driveway.

Environmentally Friendly

No energy use means no carbon emissions; making Evaglow a truly sustainable material that decreases energy use. Light pollution into the sky is lowered, and the need for street lighting is reduced.

Easy Installation

  • Evaglow is non-toxic and cold-applied to a stable substrate.
  • Foot traffic can begin on Evaglow in just two hours after it has been installed, with a full cure of the material taking place in seven days.
  • Evaglow only requires a minimal layer, needs no cutting and is seamless resulting in little, if any, waste
  • It’s resistant to oils and chemicals and is easily maintained; merely sweeping or washing the material from time to time is sufficient for cleaning.

For a practical yet sustainable surface material for any outdoor or indoor paving system, whether for a commercial project or for your home, Evaglow is an innovative paving system that will not only aesthetically enhance your hardscape areas but is also a functional, economical, and safe solution for your indoor flooring and outdoor concrete paving surfaces needs. And the soft glow at night that Evaglow produces will surely make for a great impression to anyone who sees it. Be prepared to show off your flooring!

Planning Your Garden – Things To Consider

PLANNING YOUR GARDEN – THINGS TO CONSIDER

Whether you are planning to make some changes to your garden yourself or considering hiring a professional, there are a number of things to consider and decide upon in order to create your dream garden.

Imagine your garden as an extension of your home and think about how you intend to use it. Entertaining your friends and family is often a high priority in the Middle East and we are very lucky to live in a climate where we have the weather on our side (for most of the year anyway) and can utilise the space to suit our lifestyles.

Before enlisting a sub-contractor, you should really have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and by going through the following points, we hope this will help you to identify your garden needs and desires.

GARDEN USERS

Who will be using the garden? The design and content of the garden may change slightly depending on the user and their particular needs;

  • Family members – Interests / Hobbies
  • Young / Old family members – Age appropriate / Medical problems / Mobility issues / Allergies

SCOPE OF WORK

How much work are you planning to do? What you may consider to be just a few enhancements to your garden, may end up being a complete re-design once you have made a wish list. Consider the following elements / works that may make up your garden;

  • Complete re-design
  • Partial design / renovation
  • Irrigation design / plan
  • Outdoor lighting design / plan
  • Hardscape – paving / concrete
  • Softscape – planting / lawn
  • Swimming pool / water feature

  • Maintenance

Before carrying out any works in your garden, you should check with the landlord / developer for any restrictions or permissions that may be required. Certain developments may have guidelines on building structures or restricted plants.

How To Prevent Common Lawn Diseases And Pests

How To Prevent Common Lawn Diseases And Pests

Prevent the most common lawn diseases and pests.

All natural lawns are subject to pest and diseases, even a well maintained lawn which appears green and healthy can be suddenly affected. Therefore, it is important to know what to look for and how to prevent it, before it is too late.

Firstly, make sure that when you use any pesticides or fertilizers that you check the manufacturer’s instructions / recommendations. These can be toxic so it is imperative that you check before use to ensure the safety and well being of you, your family and your pets. Also make sure any herb gardens or water sources are not contaminated.

Carry out regular checks for any pests or symptoms of disease. As soon as any pests or disease have been identified, you should treat immediately to stop it spreading further.

PESTS

With lawns you can separate the pest into two categories. These are above ground pests that eat the grass blades and below ground pests that feed on the roots.

  • For below ground pests (such as mole crickets, wireworms, grubs, etc.), you need to apply the pesticide (as per the manufacturer’s instructions) then water the lawn to ensure the insecticide / pesticide is soaked down into the roots. Below ground pests tend to be nearer the surface in the evenings when the ground is dryer, this is the ideal time for treatment. There are several pesticides available on the market such as Diazinon or Dursban that can be used to treat below ground pests.

  • For above ground pest (such as mites, army worms, etc.) we would also recommend application in the early evening, however, do not water until the following morning. Again, Diazinon and Dursban can be used or there is Malathion or Kelthane that can also be used.

Nematodes are tiny worms, which are too small to be seen by the eyes. They are not like earthworm and are a common pest in this region due to the sandy soil and warm weather. Root Knot Nematodes are the most common type in this region and attack the roots, which will cause the grass to wilt and deteriorate, as it gets weaker. This may be the reason why your lawn is thin and has yellow/brown patches, which is more often than not believed to be due to under watering.

If you believe you may have Nematodes, we recommend that you get the grass/soil tested first in order to identify exactly what the problem and so it can be treated accordingly. To treat nematodes you can use Dazoment or Ridomil. Always use with caution and as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

FUNGAL DISEASE

Fungal Disease is another common problem in the region and is generally caused by over watering and/or watering late in the day. To try to avoid this, we recommend watering in the early mornings and if and when necessary, early afternoons in the summer. When watering your lawn, you would want to make sure the water soaks down into the soil and encourages the grass roots to grow deeper. Therefore, regular lawn maintenance such as mowing, de-thatching and spiking are also very importance in order to prevent fungal disease.

Fertilizing and Watering For A Lush, Green Lawn

If you already have natural grass or are considering installing natural grass in your garden, here are some tips for fetilizing and watering a lush green healthy lawn:

WATERING

  • Watering should be carried out daily and we strongly recommend using an automatic irrigation system. This will help regulate the amount of water used and reduce the likelihood of over or under watering. We generally find most people/gardeners in this part of the world underestimate the amount of water required.
  • We recommend watering once a day in the early morning as this will help avoid water evaporation. Try to avoid watering at night as this may cause fungal disease.
  • The amount of water will vary depending on the time of year. In addition, newly planted grass will require more water whilst establishing. Please see table below as a guide.

Plant: Grass

Water requirement in the winter months per m2: 8 Litres

Water requirement in the summer months per m2: 14 litres

FERTILIZING

  • To have a healthy green lawn, your grass not only needs regular water, but also requires nutrients. These nutrients come in fertilizers and may vary slightly depending on a few factors. Fertilizing is a bit of a science and whilst all landscape professionals agree that it’s essential for a healthy lawn, many have their own fertilizing programs that they use.
  • The amount and coverage of fertilizer is important. Too little and you will not get the desired effect of a dense green lawn and too much can weaken the grass.
  • Depending on the size of grass area, the fertilizer can be applied by machine or for smaller areas can be applied by hand. Make sure you follow the safety and application manual from the fertilizer manufacturer.
  • We recommend applying the fertilizers prior to watering and then water thoroughly.
  • As a minimum, we recommend using an NPK fertilizer with an application rate of 25-30 gms/m2 per month.

Natural Grass Selection For Your Lawn

Natural Grass Selection

The desire for a lush green lawn is common amongst those of us lucky enough to have a garden. Grass not only softens the garden against hardscape, but it also provides a surface where the family can relax and play.

Retaining a year round lush green lawn is that little bit more difficult in the Middle East for obvious reasons, however if you are willing to put in the extra time and money, then the results can really make it worthwhile. When considering a natural lawn, bear in mind that you will pay a monthly premium for the luxury and you will need to consider the increase in your water bill, fertilizer, pesticide and maintenance costs.

If you already have natural grass or are considering adding natural grass in your garden, here are some tips to help you in achieving your lush & healthy green lawn.

Natural Grass Options

  • Generally there are 2 different types of natural grass used in the GCC, these are PASPALLUM and BERMUDA Grass. Whilst these are both warm weather grass they still require slightly more maintenance in this climate as they are not native to this part of the world.

  • Selected developments may have to follow a particular variety of grass. If you live on / around a Golf Course, you may find that the developer will specify the same grass that the Golf Course is using. This is to stop contamination of the different varieties as it can be very difficult to control.

  • When installing natural grass, it should be installed onto a 300mm deep sweet soil layer. For best results add some compost to the sweet soil prior to installing the turf.

  • We recommend you use an automatic irrigation system to control the amount of water used. This will not only give you a better end result but may save you money in the long run.

  • Due to the regions temperature, the warm weather grasses go semi-dormant in the winter months. Unfortunately, this is when we are more likely to be using the lawn and the wear and tear will take longer to repair.

  • Try to avoid planting grass in shaded areas and try to allow for enough space for trees to fully establish.

Employing a gardener is very easy in the UAE, however they are not trained horticulturists & probably not trained in landscape maintenance so there will be a limit to the service they can provide. By educating yourself in grass maintenance you will at least have a good idea of what your gardener should be doing to the best of their capability.
